Inspect This, Picture #1
The area between an I-Joist and the
floor has been shimmed at the second floor. (sloppy carpentry)
The floor is cut open at this time.
Sheetrock cracking and sagging was observed at the ceiling directly below
this area. It is my belief that
this is an inadequate repair. For
starters if you are going to shim something, it should be shimmed from both
sides. Based on the sheetrock crack
below, it appears that movement occurred sometime after this joist was
initially set. Regardless of what
happened, simply shimming the space (separation) between the joist and the floor
does nothing to address the potential structural issues in this area.
This issue should be evaluated by a Structural
Engineer. Repairs of the issue
should be coordinated between a Structural Engineer and a Master Carpenter.
I also believe that full evaluation may require removal of the sheetrock
below this area.
